Abstract

This paper describes a development of limited domainexpressive speech synthesis for the Czech language. Ourcurrent speech synthesis system is based on unit selection methodsand produces high quality speech in a neutral speaking style. Thiswork focuses on modifications made in the synthesis algorithmto integrate expressivity into generated speech. There is alsointroduced a listening test, which should prove or disprove thatexpressivity in limited domain speech synthesis could be modelledby so-called communicative functions. A comparison betweenneutral and expressive speech synthesis is presented. This paperalso briefly discusses the process of an expressive speech corpusrecording and its annotating using the communicative functionsby means of another listening test.
