Abstract

This thesis concerns the development of the statistical semantic parser, primarily for use in the spoken dialogue systems. Particular emphasis is laid on the problems encountered in the statistical modeling. Chapter 5 describes the development of the human-human train time table semantic corpus. First, it details the annotation scheme and the process of annotation. In addition, it analyzes the obtained annotation in terms of inter and intra annotator agreement. Finally, it estimates lower-bound baselines and upper-bound ceilings for each part of the annotation scheme. Chapters 6 and 7 analyze the implementation of the baseline system. The outcomes of the analysis are then exploited in the following chapters. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 describe the improvements to the baseline parser such as the use of negative examples, the left-right-branching parsing, and the semantic parser input parametrization. Finally, Chapter 11 concludes the thesis, and we discuss the main contributions.
