Abstract

This paper deals with temperature control of heating/cooling processes. From the control point of view it is important that such processes belong to a class of asymmetrical nonlinear systems and it is why commonly used PID controllers achieve a very limited performance. Firstly, the paper shortly introduce recently developed sliding mode temperature controller. Secondly, there are described two optimization based procedures of automatic tuning, the first one based on theoretical way and the second one, where tuning rules are found by numerical optimization. The main result of the paper is comparison of these procedures. At the end, several illustrating examples are given.
